Sisimiut Museum was founded in 1986 in the oldest house in town. Since then, the museum has taken over most of the surrounding buildings in Sisimiut’s old town. This is one of the most complete and well-preserved historical town centres in Greenland.
In 2015 Sisimiut Museum took over the privately owned Kangerlussuaq Museum located in the old American headquarters for Sondre Strom Airbase in Kangerlussuaq.
The museum is owned by Qeqqata Kommunia and is a certified museum.
