Qimmeq: the Greenlandic Sled Dog

Sisimiut Museum is a participant in the research project Qimmeq – the Greenlandic Sled Dog, which is part of Greenland Perspectives and supported by Velux Fonden and Johanne Louis Hansens Fond.

The beginning of the project was marked by a large symposium in Sisimiut in December 2016 featuring talks, meetings and a workshop demonstrating dog sledge construction across the Arctic Region. The sledges have subsequently been donated to Sisimiut Museum where they are displayed during the summer months.

The museum also participates in the curation of a travelling exhibition in cooperation with other Greenlandic museums. The exhibition is set to tour the local museums of Greenland and disseminate the knowledge generated by the Qimmeq project. The project includes the preparation of teaching materials for Greenlandic school children in cooperation with the National History Museum in Copenhagen.
